MANCHESTER -- Police Sgt. William Young was arrested early Wednesday on drunken driving allegations and was placed on administrative leave with pay.

Police responded to a one-vehicle accident at the intersection of Woodland and Duval streets shortly before 1:30 a.m., a press release said. When officers arrived, they discovered the vehicle involved in the accident and saw that the driver had fled into a nearby condominium development.

The press release said Young approached the officers, who arrested him and charged him with driving while intoxicated, evading responsibility and unreasonable speed.

Officials said Wednesday that Young was placed on administrative leave with pay pending an internal affairs investigation.

Young, 30, has been with the department for nine years and recently was promoted to sergeant. Police called Young a well-respected officer, and he has received several awards.

In 1999, he and another officer received the chief's citation medal for developing the department's website.

In 2000, Young shared a distinguished service medal with a fellow officer for catching a fleeing suspect in a Chestnut Street shooting.

In 2003, several officers, including Young, received a letter of commendation for assisting Hartford police in pursuing a vehicle in which a female passenger was believed to have been taken hostage.
